Typhoon Matmo heads toward the coast of Quang Ninh tonight

Typhoon Matmo is heading for the northern coast of Quang Ninh Province on the night of October 5 and is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to northern Vietnam.

At 10 am on October 5, Typhoon Matmo was located at approximately 20.5 degrees north latitude and 110.9 degrees east longitude, about 335 km east-southeast of Mong Cai, Quang Ninh Province, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

The storm’s maximum sustained winds near the center were 12-13 on the Beaufort scale (118-149 km/h), with gusts reaching level 15 (up to 175 km/h). Over the next hours, it is moving west-northwestward at a speed of 20-25 km/h.

By around 10 pm on October 5, Matmo is expected to reach the waters off Quang Ninh Province with winds of 11-12 (103-133 km/h) and gusts up to level 15 (175 km/h).

By 10 am on October 6, the storm will be located over the border area between Lang Son (Vietnam) and Guangxi (China), weakening to level 6-7 (39-61 km/h) with gusts at level 9 (up to 88 km/h).

By around 10 pm on October 6, it will move over the northern mountainous region of northern Vietnam and weaken into a tropical depression.

The NCHMF also forecast that from the night of October 5 through the night of October 7, the northern mountainous and midland areas will experience heavy to very heavy rain, with total rainfall ranging from 150-250 mm, and in some places exceeding 400 mm.

Rainfall intensity exceeding 150 mm within three hours is possible. The Red River Delta and Thanh Hoa Province are likely to receive moderate to heavy rain of 70–150 mm, locally above 200 mm.

Hanoi is less likely to be affected by strong winds but should watch for thunderstorms, whirlwinds, and gusty winds. From early October 6 through October 7, the capital will see moderate to heavy rain, totaling 70-120 mm, with some areas exceeding 150 mm.

Due to the storm’s broad circulation, thunderstorms, whirlwinds, and strong gusts may occur both before and during landfall.
