Ho Chi Minh City will convert both sides of Mai Chi Tho Boulevard into nearly 6 kilometres of bicycle lanes, the city’s first dedicated cycling route, as part of efforts to promote green transport and improve cyclist safety.

The VND 12.7 billion (approximately USD 516,000) project will start on October 1 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The two-way bike lanes, each 2 metres wide, will be built on existing pavements along Mai Chi Tho Boulevard.

The corridor will connect with five parking and service stations, which in turn link to passenger transfer points and existing bus stops, improving access to public transport.

According to the Urban Transport Management Centre, the completed system will connect major residential areas with parks, metro stations and other hubs, creating a green mobility corridor for residents.

Mai Chi Tho Boulevard stretches over 6.3 kilometres and is considered a backbone transport route at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City. The thoroughfare, which runs from the Saigon River tunnel to the Cat Lai interchange and Vo Nguyen Giap Street, accommodates 10 to 14 traffic lanes.
