300,000 mobilised to brace for Super Typhoon Ragasa

The Vietnamese government has deployed 300,000 troops, 8,000 vehicles, and six aircraft to prepare for rescue operations as Super Typhoon Ragasa is forecast to make landfall on September 25.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Ragasa may hit Vietnam’s mainland with sustained winds of level 9-10, gusting 12-13, possibly 14. As it moves inland, the intensity could weaken to levels 8-9, with gusts of 11-12. However, the forecast remains uncertain within 72 hours.

At a meeting on September 22, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep urged strict control of fishing vessel operations, especially in the north-central region and the Gulf of Tonkin.

“All vessels must be monitored; no ship should leave port without clear tracking and communication,” he stressed, adding that offshore aquaculture cages must also be under close supervision.

Major General Pham Hai Chau, Deputy Head of the Rescue Department under the Ministry of Defence, said that 300,000 soldiers, militia, and reservists have been mobilised, alongside 8,000 vehicles and six aircraft, to be ready for relief efforts.

He also warned of landslide risks in mountainous provinces and threats from storm circulation along coastal areas such as Quang Ninh, where transport and tourism activities face high danger if precautionary measures are not enforced.
