The project was approved in 2005 with an initial investment of over VND 273 billion (approximately USD 12.3 million). However, after several adjustments, its total cost has risen to approximately VND 680 billion (approximately USD 27 million), mainly due to additional compensation expenses.

According to Phu, 38, a frequent commuter on the road, traffic congestion is often severe. He said one midday delivery took him more than 20 minutes to cover just 500 metres.

Traffic jams frequently occur at the junction of Pham Van Bach and Truong Chinh streets.

Pham Van Bach Road has also severely deteriorated, riddled with potholes and craters.

Nguyen Van Phong, 51, said the situation has persisted for years, posing risks to road users, especially during the rainy season. Although the contractor has repeatedly filled the potholes, the damage quickly reappears.

The road is narrow, with many businesses encroaching on it, displaying signboards and parking motorbikes, forcing pedestrians to walk on the street.

The Pham Van Bach Road expansion project spans 5.7 kilometres, with a planned width ranging from 12 to 23 metres. At present, many houses remain uncleared and stand alongside those that have already been relocated.

Land clearance and compensation are scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2025, enabling the project to be finished and improving traffic connectivity to Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
