Vietnamese NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur on September 18, discussing measures to promote bilateral relations, including a target to raise two-way trade to USD 18 billion during the 2025-2030 period.
At the meeting, both leaders welcomed the positive and practical developments in Vietnam-Malaysia relations, noting the milestone of upgrading bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024.
Two-way trade in the first seven months of 2025 reached USD 9.23 billion, up 8 per cent from the same period in 2024. People-to-people exchanges have strengthened, and cooperation between Vietnam National Industry - Energy Group (PetroVietnam) and Malaysia’s National Petroleum Limited (Petronas) has become a symbol of effective bilateral collaboration.
They agreed to further consolidate political trust through high-level and inter-parliamentary exchanges; enhance trade and investment cooperation toward a balanced target of USD 18 billion; and strengthen collaboration in energy, oil and gas, science and technology, digital transformation, innovation, artificial intelligence, fisheries, Halal industry, as well as active participation in the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) projects.
Chairman Man emphasised the need to finalise the Action Programme to implement the Vietnam–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for 2025–2030 and actively advance green energy projects, including trilateral cooperation on renewable electricity exports from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore.
PM Ibrahim, for his part, reaffirmed Malaysia’s view of Vietnam as an important partner and expressed his desire to further deepen cooperation with Vietnam.
He thanked Vietnam for its support and active contributions as ASEAN Chair in 2025 and as Chair of the 46th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), praising the close legislative cooperation between the two countries and expressing confidence that parliamentary collaboration would continue to advance.
Chairman Man congratulated Malaysia on its leadership as ASEAN Chair in 2025, noting the success of the 46th AIPA General Assembly, which emphasises the building of a peaceful ASEAN Community, high economic growth, and the adoption of key documents.
He affirmed that the National Assembly of Vietnam will work closely with the Malaysian Parliament and other ASEAN parliaments to enhance AIPA’s role in regional connectivity, amplify people’s voices, promote intercultural exchanges, and advance the Sustainable Development Goals.
During the meeting, Chairman Man conveyed greetings from senior Vietnamese leaders to PM Ibrahim and other Malaysian leaders. He also expressed solidarity with the Malaysian people affected by floods and landslides in Sabah, wishing them a swift recovery.
National Assembly Tran Thanh Man is leading a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to attend AIPAI-46 and pay a working visit to Malaysia.
