Tropical Storm Mitag forms in the East Sea

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that at noon on September 18, a tropical depression in the East Sea strengthened into a storm, internationally named Mitag.

At 1 pm, the storm’s centre was located at around 19.9 degrees North latitude and 118.4 degrees East longitude, in the northeastern part of the East Sea. Maximum sustained winds near the centre reached level 8, at 62-74 km/h, with gusts up to level 10.

Forecasters said that in the next 24 hours, Mitag, the eighth storm of the year in the East Sea, is expected to move northwest and may intensify to level 9.

By the evening of September 19, it is forecast to make landfall in Guangdong Province, China, before weakening and dissipating, with little chance of directly affecting Vietnam.

However, due to its influence, the northeastern waters of the northern East Sea will experience showers and thunderstorms, winds at level 6-7 with gusts up to level 9, and areas near the storm centre at level 8-9 with gusts up to level 11. Waves may reach 3-5 metres, causing very rough seas.

Elsewhere, from the waters off Khanh Hoa to Ho Chi Minh City, as well as the western parts of the central and southern East Sea, thunderstorms are expected with southwest winds at level 5, sometimes level 6, with gusts of level 7-8.
