Stronger cold spells forecasted to hit northern region

Cold air masses are expected to intensify in northern localities in November and December, with severe cold spells likely to appear in late December.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has released its climate outlook for the entire country from October through March 2026.

According to the centre, between October and December, storms and tropical depressions in the East Sea affecting Vietnam are predicted to occur more frequently than the multi-year average (approximately 4.5 storms annually, with roughly 1.9 making landfall).

Storms or tropical depressions are unlikely to form in the East Sea between January and March 2026.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that cold weather is likely to intensify in November and December, persisting through January and February 2026, before gradually weakening from March 2026.

Meanwhile, severe cold spells in northern localities are expected to occur from late December and intensify in January and February 2026.

The central region, particularly from Ha Tinh to Hue and in the eastern parts of provinces such as Quang Ngai and Khanh Hoa, is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall in October and November.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms may also occur in the central region from January to March 2026. Additionally, out-of-season rains are expected in southern Vietnam during the early months of 2026.
