Thousands of cameras to be installed on expressways

The Traffic Police Department, in coordination with relevant agencies, will install over 5,000 cameras along expressways, national highways, and urban roads.

According to the Traffic Police Department, data from a newly installed camera on the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway showed that between September 1 and September 13, more than 67,600 vehicle passages were recorded by the department’s Traffic Command Centre.

The figure includes 2,000 violations, with 1,813 cases involving not wearing seatbelts, 28 instances of using a phone while driving, and 743 cases involving other violations.

Of the total, 1,261 cases were committed by commercial transport drivers, while 742 cases are related to private drivers.

The Traffic Police Department observed a surge in violations immediately after the cameras were installed. However, once it launched awareness campaigns and publicised traffic safety violations detected by the new system, the numbers began to steadily decline.

In the coming time, the department will work with relevant agencies and local police to install more than 5,000 cameras on expressways, national highways, and urban roads.
