Archaeologists have unearthed a remarkably well-preserved skeleton of a prehistoric man, about 1.7 metres tall and believed to have died at the age of 35, dating back roughly 13,000 years in Ninh Binh Province.

The discovery was made at Thung Binh 1 Cave in the Trang An World Cultural and Natural Heritage Complex under the SUNDASIA archaeological project, the Ninh Binh Provincial Department of Culture and Sports announced on September 7.

Researchers determined the man died from an injury caused by a sharp quartz tool that pierced his upper rib near the neck, leading to a fatal infection. Analysis suggests he may have survived for weeks or months after the injury. Scientists regard this as possibly the earliest evidence of interpersonal conflict among prehistoric populations in mainland Southeast Asia.

DNA analysis of the remains revealed the oldest known mitochondrial genome ever sequenced in Vietnam, linking the individual to ancient hunter-gatherer groups across Southeast Asia and South Asia, with genetic continuity to modern Vietnamese populations.

The study also highlighted cultural connections: the quartz projectile point found at the site did not match local stone tool technology, suggesting either contact with other groups or the development of new techniques within the Trang An community.

The findings were published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 2025.

Provincial tourism officials said the discovery not only carries major scientific significance but also strengthens the global recognition of Trang An as a world heritage site, while offering Vietnam an opportunity to showcase its cultural and historical heritage to the world.
