Pham Van Huy is the eldest son of the couple Pham Van Su and Nguyen Thi Nhai in Long Hung Ward. Huy has a younger sister, Pham Thuy Van, 12 and a younger brother, Pham Van Hieu, 5.
Nhai said that in October 2021, Huy suffered from leg pain and a limp, but doctors at a local hospital found nothing unusual. For the next month, the pain persisted, and after several more check-ups, he was diagnosed with inflammation and prescribed medicine, yet his condition did not improve.

In January 2022, the family took Huy to the HCM City Orthopaedics and Traumatology Hospital for a biopsy, which revealed a malignant tumour in his heel bone.
Doctors urged Huy’s immediate admission for surgery and chemotherapy, but financial hardship forced his parents to take him home in tears. Only in March 2022, after borrowing money, could they bring him back to hospital, but by then, the disease had already advanced to stage III.
When being well enough, Huy attends class. Teachers at Long Binh Tan Secondary School send lessons during his hospital stays. By the 2024-2025 school year, he had completed grade 7. Even on treatment days, he carries his books, studying whenever the pain from chemotherapy subsides.

Following nearly three years of treatment for Huy, his parents are utterly depleted and have no means left to carry on.
The family of five now survives on the VND 5.5 million (USD 217) monthly salary Su earns as a security guard. Occasionally, he takes on rides as a motorbike taxi driver, but the income is minimal.
Huy is scheduled for surgery at the Children’s Hospital in HCM City; however, Nhai said, "I have no means to cover the cost. All I can do is plead for the compassion of Dantri/Dtinews readers and donors to help save my child”.
