Dalat pine hill leaves residents in fear

Many residents in Langbiang-Dalat Ward in Lam Dong Province have been gripped by anxiety following a landslide on the upper slope of a pine-covered hill.

K’Nam, a resident, said that years ago, large-scale excavation for a road project removed vast amounts of soil and rock from the hill’s base, creating an upper slope tens of metres high and hundreds of metres long.

“After heavy rains, soil and rocks cascade down from above, posing a grave danger. With the landslide just a few hundred metres from Pang Tieng Hamlet, we are deeply concerned,” he added.

The collapsed slope, about 50 metres long and rising tens of metres above the road, sent hundreds of cubic metres of soil and rock crashing down, toppling pine trees. Water erosion has also carved deep gullies into the hillside.

According to a Langbiang-Dalat Ward official, the pine-covered slope in Pang Tieng Hamlet has shown signs of landslides since last year, and authorities have surveyed and assessed the site’s condition.

“We considered building a reinforced concrete slope, but surveys deemed it unnecessary, so it was not implemented. For spots prone to landslides, we keep them under watch and call on authorities to act during heavy rains to ensure safety,” noted the official.
