According to residents, the rubbish was carried downstream by the Lam River due to heavy floods in late July.

Various types of waste have blanketed the surface of the Lam River, mostly dry branches, tree trunks, and household rubbish.

Animal carcasses have drifted in and become trapped, decomposing and releasing a stench that is polluting the area.

Cua Hoi-Xuan Pho Anchorage, next to Xuan Hoi Fishing Port, has been clogged with rubbish, blocking berths and hindering boat access.

The port management have sought higher-level support, but a lack of machinery, equipment, and workers is slowing the clean-up.

Authorities have urged locals not to collect driftwood, citing risks of accidents and disease, yet many have continued to do so in recent days.

Bui Tuan Son, Director of the Ha Tinh Fishing Ports and Storm-Shelter Anchorages Management Board, said an estimated 500-700 tonnes of rubbish had been swept into the port and mooring area.

The unit has asked the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment and the Ha Tinh People’s Committee for over VND 700 million (USD 27,500) to fund the waste clean-up.

While awaiting funding approval, the board has used its resources to hire crews and deploy machinery and cranes to clear part of the waste.
