Hanoi faces power outages amid record-breaking heatwave

Over 20 wards and communes in Hanoi faced scheduled power cuts on August 5 as the city coped with extreme heat.

Affected areas included Kim Lien, Van Mieu, Quoc Tu Giam, Thanh Xuan, Khuong Dinh, Yen Nghia, Phu Luong, and Kien Hung. The outages impacted both households and businesses.

In Kim Lien Ward, homes from No. 146 to No. 202 Khuong Thuong Street and Alley 554 Truong Chinh Street lost power from 8am to 4pm. In Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam, households from No. 2 to 16 in Alley 222 Le Duan Street and Block B5, Sub-alley 16/222 also experienced outages during the same period.

In Yen Nghia Ward, parts of the Do Nghia Urban Area had no power from 8am to 12pm. Some outages, however, were later postponed, including in Residential Groups 6 and 7 of Phu Luong Ward and Groups 4 and 5 in Kien Hung Ward.

According to the National Power System and Market Operation Company (NSMO), electricity demand surged across northern Vietnam from August 1 to 4 due to the intense heatwave.

During the peak period on the afternoon of August 4 (from 1.30pm to 2.30pm), the national power system reached a record peak load of 54,500 MW.

Several 220kV and 500kV transmission lines and transformers were under heavy stress, with some operating at or above capacity in high-demand areas.

The power sector has urged consumers to use electricity efficiently, especially during peak hours between 1pm and 3pm, and from 8pm to 11pm. Energy-saving appliances and efficient power use are strongly encouraged.
