Wild animals kill livestock in Dien Bien

Dozens of buffaloes and cows have been killed by wild animals over the past three months in the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien.

Chairman of Nua Ngam Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Thanh Trung, told Dantri/Dtinews on July 27 that between April and mid-July, wild wolves attacked approximately 50 buffaloes and cows belonging to 31 households, causing an estimated loss of VND 350 million (approximately USD 13,840).

The Vietnam Administration of Forestry and the Forest Protection Department said tracks found at the scene suggest the livestock were attacked by either golden jackals (Canis aureus) or dholes (Cuon alpinus), both listed under Group IB as endangered and rare species protected by law.

The Forestry Administration has requested the Dien Bien Forest Protection Sub-Department to coordinate with local authorities and relevant agencies to conduct investigations and implement appropriate measures to ensure public safety and support wildlife conservation efforts.

It also urged provincial authorities to raise community awareness about precautionary measures, discourage intrusion into natural wildlife habitats, and prevent illegal hunting activities.
