Many houses are swept away or damaged in Nghe An Province in a flood on July 22.

Located near the Vietnam-Laos border, Nhon Mai Commune, already one of the poorest in Nghe An Province, has suffered massive damage after days of torrential rains triggered deadly flash floods.

According to initial reports, 28 houses in Nhon Mai were completely destroyed, another 15 severely damaged, and 48 families had to be evacuated. One person was killed.

All transport routes into the commune have been cut off. Three suspension bridges were swept away, and the electricity, water supply, medical station and schools have been left heavily damaged.

“The total estimated damage is over VND 231 billion (approximately USD 9 million), far beyond what our poor commune can handle,” said Le Hong Thai, Chairman of Nhon Mai People’s Committee. “Many residents have lost everything. Some are now homeless, with no clothes or food. We’ve tried to move people into community houses and schools, but that’s only a temporary fix. Our biggest concern now is the shortage of clean water and food.”

Seo Thi Tuyet, 40, a resident of Co Ha Village, sat stunned beside the debris of her home. “The flood came so fast. I could only grab my child and run. We lost everything,” she said. Her family is now relying on neighbours and emergency food supplies.

Around 20 kilometres away, My Ly Commune also reported severe damage. As many as 231 homes were damaged, with 109 completely collapsed. Initial losses are estimated at over VND 30 billion (approximately USD 1.2 million).

National Highway 16, the lifeline into My Ly, has been buried under landslides and broken in multiple sections. Inter-village roads have also been cut off.

“Floodwaters rose over 10 metres in some areas, submerging homes and washing away everything,” said Luong Van Bay, Chairman of My Ly People’s Committee. “This is the worst disaster we’ve seen in decades. Dozens of families are now left with nothing and urgently need food, medicine and clean water.”
