Dantri's Editor-in-Chief Pham Tuan Anh gives scholarships to Lao Cai orphans on July 16.

Speaking at the event in Hanoi on July 16, Dantri's Editor-in-Chief Pham Tuan Anh said Typhoon Yagi caused severe human and economic losses across northern provinces in September 2024, leaving many children orphaned.

To help affected communities recover from the disaster, Dantri/Dtinews launched a fundraising campaign calling on readers, philanthropists, organisations, businesses and the wider community to contribute.

In Lao Cai, the newspaper funded the construction of 11 houses, donated VND 2 billion (USD 78,800) to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Lao Cai Province to support recovery efforts, contributed to rebuilding Lang Nu village, gave VND 110 million (USD 4,330) to families in need and provided warm clothes to students.

Significantly, Dantri also connected with mental health expert Nguyen Thi Lanh from Minh Tri Thanh Academy JSC, who pledged long-term sponsorship for 10 orphaned children until they reach the age of 18. Nine children who lost one parent will receive monthly support of VND 2.5 million (USD 98.50), while Vang Thi Bau, born in 2013 and orphaned of both parents, will receive VND 3 million (USD 118.20) per month. The total sponsorship package is estimated at VND 3 billion (USD 118,200).

At the Hanoi event, Dantri's Editor-in-Chief Pham Tuan Anh personally presented 10 scholarships, each worth VND 1 million (USD 39.40), to the children on behalf of the donors. He offered words of encouragement, wishing them strength and success in their studies so they may grow into contributing members of society.

“The presence of these children today is a testament to the resilient spirit of the Vietnamese people, who rise above hardship and work together to build a better future,” he said.

Pham also expressed gratitude to donors nationwide, including Minh Tri Thanh Academy’s leadership, for their trust and meaningful support, both material and emotional, for Dantri’s humanitarian initiatives.

In a heartfelt speech, Nguyen Thi Lanh said Minh Tri Thanh chose to partner with Dantri because of the newspaper’s transparency and dedication. “Our goal is to ensure support reaches the right people in the right way,” she said.

“The decision to sponsor these 10 orphans was not just a personal wish or that of our company’s leadership. It reflects the collective will of all our staff,” she added.

Minh Tri Thanh also pledged to continue supporting the children beyond the age of 18 if they pursue higher education.

Among the beneficiaries, Vang Thi Bau (born 2013) and Nguyen Hang Nga (born 2016) were recognised as excellent students in the past school year. Both expressed joy at visiting the capital for the first time.

Luc Minh Quan (born 2008), one of the sponsored children, expressed deep gratitude for the support and the opportunity to visit Hanoi. He described the scholarship from Dantri as a meaningful gift, both materially and emotionally, for himself and others in similar situations.
