Hanoi spends VND 30 billion on metro fire safety upgrades

Hanoi authorities have approved a VND 30 billion (USD 1.18 million) project to install fire safety equipment on the Cat Linh-Hanoi Dong metro route (Line 2A).

The project will install automatic fire suppression systems at 12 stations and the depot, along with smoke extraction systems in battery and electrical rooms, ensuring each station is equipped with two independent smoke control systems.

It is scheduled for implementation during the 2025-2026 period.

Hanoi Railway One Member Co. Ltd. has been assigned to be the project investor.

The 13-kilometre Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro line, with 12 elevated stations, has operated commercially since November 2021. Each four-carriage train carries up to 960 passengers, reaching speeds of 80 kilometres per hour and averaging 35 kilometres per hour.

From August 1, new fares will apply for the service, with a 40 per cent rise. Non-cash fares range from VND 8,595 for one stop to VND 18,625 for the whole route; cash fares range from VND 9,000 to VND 19,000.

However, the line has faced repeated issues such as sudden stops, track signal errors, and air condition leaks. The latest incident involved patching holes and replacing broken glass at several stations.
