Children’s Hospital 2 reported 1,585 dengue cases in the first half of 2025, an increase of more than 630 cases compared to the same period last year. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Centre for Disease Control, the city recorded 645 new cases between June 23 and June 29, a rise of over 60 per cent compared to the average over the previous four weeks.

Dr Nguyen Ngoc Luu from Children’s Hospital 2 said most patients were between 1 and 16 years old, with the 12 to 16 age group accounting for the highest proportion.

At Ho Chi Minh City Children’s Hospital, Deputy Director Nguyen Tran Nam said the facility is currently treating nearly 30 paediatric dengue patients, including two in critical condition. The number of cases has doubled or tripled compared to the previous week.

Meanwhile, the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases has recorded three dengue-related deaths. All three patients were young and obese, and were admitted in a state of shock, which recurred multiple times. They suffered from severe liver and kidney damage, blood clotting disorders, internal bleeding and infections. Despite receiving blood transfusions, dialysis, plasma exchange and intensive care, all three patients died.

The hospital also reported a significant increase in severe cases, averaging six to seven per week.

As the outbreak worsens, health authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have issued warnings about the high risk of a large-scale dengue epidemic. Doctors are urging residents to take mosquito prevention measures and to seek immediate medical attention if early symptoms appear.
