Living in a deteriorating stilt house deep inside Khai Cai Hamlet, Quyet Thang Commune, 50-year-old Bui Van Han has been unable to work for years due to kidney stones and rheumatoid arthritis. Limited in mobility, Han can only manage light household tasks.
His wife, Bui Thi Con, 46, has also endured years of illness. In 2021, she sustained serious injuries after being gored by the family’s buffalo. More recently, doctors discovered an ovarian tumour, requiring close monitoring and urgent treatment. With no money for hospital care, the couple rely on forest herbs to prepare medicinal drinks as a last resort.
Their eldest daughter, Bui Thi Nhu Hoai, 11, suffers from a severe scalp condition that has caused complete hair loss over the past five years. The cause remains undiagnosed due to the family’s inability to afford medical consultation or treatment.
According to Con, Hoai often lies awake at night, crying due to intense pain and itching. The girl scratches her scalp until it bleeds. Once an outgoing child, Hoai has become withdrawn and fearful of ridicule from her classmates, and her ability to interact socially has declined significantly.
“Seeing my daughter suffer like this breaks my heart, but we are powerless to help. I beg for support so she can receive proper treatment and regain her confidence,” Con said in tears.
In 2023, the couple had a second child, Bui Minh Tuyen. Already burdened by illness and poverty, the family’s situation worsened. Baby Tuyen has been diagnosed with stunted growth and malnutrition, and the household regularly lacks both medicine and food.
Speaking to Dantri, Khai Cai Hamlet Head Bui Van Tu confirmed that Han’s family has been classified as poor for many years. Their house, Tu said, is in a severely dilapidated condition and no longer safe to live in.
“We urgently appeal to kind-hearted individuals and Dantri readers to support this family with basic medical treatment and a safe home,” Tu said.
