The animal passed away due to illness on what would have been its tenth birthday.
Ngo Khong was one of three cubs born in 2015 to a pair of tigers carrying a rare recessive gene responsible for white fur. White Bengal tigers are often affected by genetic disorders linked to inbreeding, which can lead to various health issues. Of the three cubs born at the time, one died from a congenital digestive defect, while another, named Bo Sua, was hand-reared with formula after the mother ran out of milk. Ngo Khong was the only cub raised by the mother.
Following the death of its mother, Ngo Khong lived alone. Known for its playful yet reserved nature, the tiger was closely bonded with its primary caretaker, affectionately referred to as "foster dad."
In early June, Ngo Khong began showing signs of illness, including digestive problems and a loss of appetite. Despite the health decline, the tiger continued its routine, interacting with zoo visitors at scheduled times.
The zoo brought in veterinary experts to monitor and treat the tiger. In early July, Ngo Khong showed signs of recovery, regaining its appetite and moving around the enclosure. However, on the night of July 6, its condition suddenly worsened. Despite the caretakers' efforts, the tiger died under close supervision.
White Bengal tigers are known to suffer from various genetically related health problems, including poor eyesight, weakened immune systems, skeletal and neurological issues, kidney disorders, and heightened sensitivity to sunlight. These factors pose challenges to their survival in both natural and managed environments.
