Two hospitalised for exhaustion during HCM City night run

Two participants, including a South Korean national, were hospitalised for exhaustion during a night race in Ho Chi Minh City on June 29, according to 115 People’s Hospital.

The hospital’s Emergency Department received a 34-year-old woman who collapsed and experienced limb convulsions about four kilometres into the race. She was diagnosed with an electrolyte imbalance caused by overexertion. After receiving oxygen and electrolyte replacement therapy, her condition stabilised and she regained full consciousness.

The second patient, a 33-year-old South Korean man, was admitted with low blood pressure and respiratory distress after completing three kilometres. Emergency tests indicated respiratory failure and heart muscle damage linked to elevated cardiac enzymes, also due to overexertion. He was stabilised and later transferred to a clinical ward for further treatment.

Dr Nguyen Kim Long of 115 People’s Hospital said those planning to participate in intense physical activities should undergo medical screenings, including blood pressure checks, electrocardiograms (ECG), and assessments of electrolyte levels, liver, and kidney function.

Ahead of race day, participants are advised to eat a balanced diet, get sufficient rest, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and stimulants, warm up properly, and wear appropriate footwear. Individuals feeling unwell or taking diuretics should refrain from participation.

Dr Long also warned that at the first signs of chest pain, dizziness, or fatigue during exercise, people should stop immediately and seek medical help or call emergency services (115) for timely intervention.
