Vietnam to face hazardous July weather

Multiple dangerous weather events are forecast across Vietnam in July, including storms, tropical depressions, heavy rain, thunderstorms, whirlwinds, and hail.

According to the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Centre, the number of storms and tropical depressions over the East Sea is expected to match the long-term average, with potential impacts on mainland Vietnam. On average, the East Sea records approximately 1.6 storms each July, with 0.9 of these making landfall.

Average temperatures across most of the country are likely to remain close to the seasonal norm. However, some areas in the south-central coastal region and the southern region may see temperatures rise by 0.5 to 1 degree Celsius above average.

Heatwaves are forecast for the north, from Thanh Hoa to Hue, and along the south-central coast, though they are expected to be less intense than during the same period in 2024.

Heavy rains may affect the north and the central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh, while the Central Highlands and southern region are likely to experience frequent late-afternoon storms. Severe weather, including lightning, hail, and strong winds, is predicted nationwide throughout July.

Prolonged heat waves, especially in Thanh Hoa, Hue, and the coastal areas of the south-central region, may lead to droughts, water shortages, and an increased risk of fires and explosions.

Heavy rainfall, flash floods, landslides, and thunderstorms can severely impact the environment, endanger lives, disrupt transportation, and damage infrastructure, resulting in losses to production and socio-economic activities.

The Department of Dike Management and Disaster Prevention has urged affected areas to closely monitor rainfall and erosion risks, and to promptly alert local authorities and residents to ensure timely responses and minimise damage.
