Under the new pricing scheme, Netflix now charges VND 74,000 for its basic mobile package with 480p resolution, VND 114,000 for the 720p package, VND 231,000 for Full HD, and VND 273,000 for 4K streaming. Previously, the prices were VND 70,000, VND 108,000, VND 220,000, and VND 260,000, respectively, reflecting a hike of about 5 per cent.
In an email sent to Vietnamese users, Netflix explained that the price increase is related to tax adjustments. Under the 2024 VAT Law, which took effect on July 1, digital services provided by foreign companies without a permanent establishment in Vietnam via e-commerce platforms and digital channels are now subject to a 10 per cent VAT rate, up from the previous 5 per cent.
Apart from Netflix, users of other international online services such as Meta and Google have also received notices of upcoming price hikes, particularly advertisers on these platforms.
Some digital advertisers in Vietnam said they had been informed in advance and had made preparations for the change.
For individual users, services like Google One and YouTube Premium have not yet announced price increases. However, prices for most of these services currently do not include taxes.
