The exam takes place on June 26-27 and marks the first time students are being tested under the revised 2018 general education curriculum. Instead of six subjects as in previous years, candidates now take four. These include two compulsory subjects, maths and literature, and two electives chosen from those studied at school, such as sciences, social studies, technology, IT, or a foreign language.

Several major changes have been introduced this year. Each day includes two exam sessions, with exam rooms hosting up to five different subjects simultaneously. The number of test versions per subject has also doubled to 48, with 24 used in each session. In previous years, most subjects, except literature, had only 24 versions.
This is also Vietnam’s largest-ever high school graduation exam, with over 1.1 million candidates from all 63 provinces and cities. It is being held at 2,493 exam sites with more than 50,000 exam rooms.
According to official data, after the two compulsory subjects, history was the most selected elective with 499,357 registrations. This was followed by geography with 494,081, English with 358,870, and physics with 354,298.
Approximately 200,000 people including teachers, education officials, police, military, and healthcare workers have been mobilised to support the exam.
At a recent national conference on exam preparations, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh noted that this year’s exam comes at a pivotal moment. He emphasised that the exam must proceed without disruption, particularly at local levels while provincial restructuring is carried out.
