An overview of Nam Son Landfill in Hanoi

According to a proposal submitted to the Hanoi People’s Council, the project, titled “Hanoi Environmental Rehabilitation and Waste-to-Energy Project,” aims to treat daily household waste, previously buried waste at the Nam Son waste treatment complex, and sludge from the city’s drainage system using incineration technology to generate electricity.

The city aims to not only meet environmental standards but also improve the degraded landfill site, reduce odour pollution, and enhance public health in the surrounding area, particularly in Soc Son District.

The plant will have a total processing capacity of 2,400 tonnes per day, including 2,250 tonnes of household waste and 150 tonnes of dried sludge. It is expected to generate approximately 60MW of electricity.

In addition, the project includes the construction of a sludge drying system with a capacity of 600 tonnes per day, a power line connecting the plant to the national grid, a raw water pipeline, and other supporting infrastructure.

The facility will use grate incinerator technology to process unsorted household waste and dried sludge. Solidified fly ash will be disposed of at sites designated by regulatory authorities.

The project will be located on a 12.46-hectare site in the northern area of the Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex Phase II. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2029 and will be fully funded by private investors.
