Officers from the Vam Trang Trau Border Guard Station find the bag containing gold during their patrol on June 15.
According to a report from the Vam Trang Trau Border Guard Station, the incident occurred on June 15 during a routine patrol along a border trail. Officers noticed two individuals behaving suspiciously as they crossed illegally into Vietnam from the Cambodian side.
Upon seeing the border patrol, the two suspects immediately dropped a bag and fled back toward Cambodia.
Upon inspection, officers found 18 yellow metal bars inside the bag, each measuring approximately 11.5 by 5.1 centimetres. The bars bore no markings and weighed a total of 18kg.
A forensic analysis by the Ministry of Public Security's Forensic Science Institute confirmed the bars were pure gold, with a 99.99 per cent gold content and 0.01 per cent silver impurities.
The asset valuation council in Chau Thanh District estimated the value of the gold at over VND 51.4 billion (approximately USD 2 million).
Authorities are currently investigating the case.
