Rare golden turtle found at Ha Tinh home

A rare golden turtle, listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book, was recently discovered after it wandered into a local household in the central province of Ha Tinh.

The Forest Protection Unit of Huong Khe District confirmed on June 24 that it had worked with Vu Quang National Park to receive a rare golden turtle voluntarily handed over by a resident.

On June 22, Vo Thi Hong Trang from Huong Khe Town opened the front gate to find the golden-coloured turtle weighing nearly 200 grams in her yard.

Realising it was a rare species listed in the 2012 IUCN Red List, and in urgent need of conservation, Trang promptly contacted local authorities and handed it over for protection.

This turtle, commonly known as the Indochinese Box Turtle, is a highly endangered terrestrial species native to parts of China, India, Laos, and Vietnam.
