Passengers at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi
International passenger traffic reached 22.9 million, up 12.9 per cent, while domestic passengers numbered 36.8 million, an increase of 6.9 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Air cargo volumes also rose sharply. The total cargo throughput in the year's first six months reached approximately 811,400 tonnes, up 12.5 per cent. Of this, international cargo accounted for 580,000 tonnes (up 17.7 per cent), while domestic cargo rose modestly to 31,400 tonnes (up 1.3 per cent).
CAAV noted that the aviation market continues to recover strongly, particularly in the international segment, with significant passenger and cargo transport growth.
Increased international operations and partnerships have contributed to robust earnings for Vietnam Airlines throughout 2024 and early 2025. The national flag carrier plans to launch 15 new international routes this year, including Ho Chi Minh City to Bali, Nha Trang to Busan (from June), Hanoi to Milan and Da Nang to Osaka (from July).
Meanwhile, low-cost carrier Vietjet recently launched the first direct flights between Vietnam and Russia in June, linking the coastal city of Nha Trang with Russia's Far East cities of Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and Blagoveshchensk. The airline also inaugurated a direct Singapore-Phu Quoc route earlier this year.
Vietnamese carriers are expected to serve 28 million passengers during the summer travel season, including 9.6 million international travellers (up 8 per cent) and 18.4 million domestic travellers (up 7 per cent).
