Phu Quoc International Airport will be upgraded to ICAO Code 4E, allowing it to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
The expansion will be carried out under a direct commercial investment model, with a total capital of VND 21,998 billion (approximately USD 866 million). The project will be implemented in two phases: from 2025 to 2027 and from 2027 to 2030.
According to the approved plan, the airport will be upgraded to ICAO Code 4E, allowing it to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350. Covering a total area of 1,050 hectares, the project will raise the airport’s annual capacity to 20 million passengers, 4.5 times higher than its current capacity.
Infrastructure development includes extending the existing 3,500-metre runway and constructing a second 3,300-metre runway. The aircraft parking area will be expanded to over 100 positions, including 45 spots for wide-body aircraft, integrated with modern passenger boarding bridges.
Terminal 2, designed by Singapore-based CPG Consultants, will feature advanced technologies such as remote check-in, automated baggage sorting, and biometric identification systems, reducing passenger processing time to just 15 to 20 seconds per person.
At the investment decision ceremony held on June 19, Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Chairman of the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee, described the project as a key strategic investment with significant capital input, crucial for supporting Vietnam’s hosting of APEC 2027. He emphasised that the upgraded airport would be a driving force for shaping Phu Quoc’s development, regional connectivity and global integration.
“APEC 2027 is an opportunity to showcase a modern, open, and dynamic Vietnam. Phu Quoc will be where the country welcomes the world,” Nhan said.
Bui Thanh Trung, Chairman of Sun Group Southern Region, affirmed the group’s commitment to the highest standards in quality, progress, and sustainability, aiming to build a smart, eco-friendly international airport worthy of Phu Quoc’s global ambitions.
He added that the airport would be more than just infrastructure, it would become a new symbol and a launchpad for Phu Quoc to transform into an international hub for ecology, tourism, finance and innovation in the post-APEC 2027 era.
Phu Quoc is one of Vietnam’s premier tourist destinations. Its only airport is currently operating beyond capacity, particularly during peak travel seasons.
