Landslides and flooding force mass evacuation in Quang Tri

Torrential rain has triggered severe landslides and flooding in the central province of Quang Tri, prompting the evacuation of nearly 500 households.

Rising water levels in the Thach Han and O Lau rivers have submerged around 2,000 homes as downpours continue across the province.

A major landslide struck Sa Mu Pass on the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road in Huong Hoa District, dumping an estimated 50 cubic metres of soil and rock and blocking traffic. Local authorities quickly cordoned off the area, issued warnings, and urged residents to stay clear.

Le Thi Luy, 57, from Trieu Thanh Commune in Trieu Phong District, said her home was flooded under half a metre of water. This was the first time she had seen such heavy flooding in the middle of June.

Officials have moved more than 1,000 people from affected areas. The flooding has also damaged nearly 20,000 hectares of rice fields, affected about 100 hectares of aquaculture farms, and destroyed large areas of forest plantations.
