Two of her children are disabled. The 38-year-old, without a stable job or secure housing, lives with her three youngest daughters in a makeshift shack constructed from scrap wood and warped metal sheets. The shelter lacks furniture and beds, featuring only a cracked cement floor and a thin metal roof that intensifies the summer heat.
During a visit by a Dantri/Dtinews reporter, their lunch consisted of rice mixed with instant noodles. "On days when I can earn some money doing odd jobs, we might buy a little fish or more noodles to go with the rice," Ho Lon said. "But on days without income, we eat wild vegetables with salt or fish sauce. It hurts to see my children hungry and thirsty. I try my best to work, but our situation never improves."

She married two decades ago and gave birth to five children aged 3 to 20. After her marriage ended, her husband left, and she has been the sole provider since. Her younger brother helps care for her two eldest sons, both of whom are disabled, while the three girls stay with her.
She forages for firewood, picks wild vegetables to sell, or works on cassava and sugarcane farms daily. Despite her hard labour, she struggles to afford her children's food and educational necessities. "Almost everything the children have, clothes, school supplies, bicycles, even toys, have been donated," Ho Lon shared. "Because of poor nutrition, they are all underweight and stunted."
She dreams of repairing their decrepit home to keep her family safe during storms, but with daily survival still uncertain, even that modest hope seems far out of reach.
A local, Thanh Nhan, said Ho Lon's family is among the most impoverished in Le Diem Village. "It's hard enough for one person to raise five children, let alone two with disabilities," she said. "Everyone in the village pities her and sometimes gives rice or fish sauce. But rebuilding her house is beyond what anyone here can afford."
Ngo Binh Thinh, Chairman of Hai Rieng Town People's Committee, confirmed that local authorities classify Ho Lon's family as poor. Two of her children, one with neurological disabilities and the other with limited mobility, each receive a monthly government allowance of VND 750,000 (approximately USD 29). However, her housing conditions are dire, with no proper roofing or sanitary facilities.
