The most recent loss was her fifth son, Duong Van Trung, who passed away in August last year after battling stomach cancer. He left behind two young sons, now under Huynh’s care, in a deteriorating, damp, tin-roofed house.

Huynh shared that she and her late husband were poor farmers. She used to supplement their income by selling vegetables, struggling daily to feed their six children.
Due to poverty, none of her children completed school. All left early to work unstable jobs and eventually started their own families.
Trung, her fifth son, went through a divorce when his children were still young. After the separation, he brought the boys to live with Huynh and took on various odd jobs to support them. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer three years ago and died from the illness last year.
Since Trung’s death, his 19-year-old eldest son has left home to find work in a neighbouring province to help support Huynh and his younger brother, Gia Vy, who is now in ninth grade.

When asked about his father, Vy said he knows the road ahead is long and is determined to study hard and live up to his father’s hopes.
Huynh’s health has declined significantly over the past three years, and she is no longer able to sell vegetables. One of her daughters helps look after her, but that family also faces financial hardship.
Nguyen Thi Bich Thuan, vice chairwoman of Tan Long Commune’s People’s Committee, confirmed that Huynh’s household is among the most disadvantaged in the area and urgently needs support.
“We hope that Dantri can serve as a bridge to connect kind-hearted individuals in Vietnam and abroad to support the family through this hardship and help Vy continue his education,” she said.
