According to the plan, the city will commence work on Metro Line 2 (Nam Thang Long-Tran Hung Dao) and Metro Line 5 (Van Cao-Hoa Lac) in October.

Metro Line 2 will span 11.5 kilometres, including 8.9 kilometres underground and 2.6 kilometres elevated, with seven stations underground and three elevated. The estimated investment has increased to nearly VND 35,600 billion (approximately USD 1.4 billion), up by over VND 16,000 billion (approximately USD 628 million) from the initial estimate approved in 2008.

The line will start from Nam Thang Long and follow Nguyen Van Huyen, Hoang Quoc Viet, Hoang Hoa Tham, Thuy Khue, Phan Dinh Phung, Hang Giay, Hang Duong, Hang Ngang, Hang Dao, Dinh Tien Hoang, and Hang Bai streets, before ending at Tran Hung Dao Street.

Metro Line 5 will require an investment of more than VND 61,900 billion (approximately USD 2.4 billion). The project will start at the intersection of Van Cao and Hoang Hoa Tham Streets in Ba Dinh District and end in Thanh Binh Commune, Thach That District. The 38-kilometre line will run through Van Cao, Ngoc Khanh, Thang Long Boulevard, Ring Road 4, and Hoa Lac, with six underground and 15 elevated stations.

Hanoi currently has one operational metro line, Line 2A (Cat Linh-Ha Dong), which began service in November 2021. The elevated section of Line 3 (Nhon-Hanoi Railway Station), covering 8.5 kilometres from Nhon to Cau Giay, has been in service since August 2024.

Under the Hanoi Capital Planning for 2021-2030, with a vision for 2050, the city plans to build 14 additional urban railway lines.

In addition to the Tu Lien Bridge, which has already broken ground, Hanoi’s Chairman Tran Sy Thanh stated that the major bridges of Hong Ha, Me So, Thuong Cat, Ngoc Hoi, Tran Hung Dao, and Van Phuc are scheduled to start construction this year.
