Dantri/DTinews readers support house for disadvantaged Soc Trang family

Dantri/DTiNews readers have donated VND120.54 million (USD4,642) to help build a new house for a low-income family in the southern province of Soc Trang.

The donations came after Dantri Newspaper published an article about the condition of Nguyen Thi Dao’s family in My An Commune.

Dao, 50, is battling liver cirrhosis but cannot afford treatment. She is also the sole caregiver for her six-year-old grandson, Nguyen Minh Luan, who has not yet started school due to the family’s financial hardship.

Luan’s father works at a construction site far from home and has a modest income.

The family lived in a dilapidated house which often leaks when it rains and is at risk of collapsing.

Along with support from Dantri/DTiNews readers, the My An Commune Red Cross has also provided Dao’s family with VND30 million to help build a new house.

The new house will be 40 square metres and include a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Construction is slated to be finished within a month.

Truong Quoc Linh, chairman of the My An People’s Committee, said around 20 percent of residents in the locality are from ethnic minority groups. As many as 100 local houses need to be rebuilt.

In response to the government’s campaign to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated housing, Dantri/DTiNews has set a goal to complete 100 houses by 2025, providing safe shelter for disadvantaged families nationwide.

Since April 10 this year, the newspaper has built 129 houses, with 94 completed and handed over.
