North set for heavy rain late May

Northern Vietnam will witness consecutive heavy rain and thunderstorms, mainly in late afternoons and at night.

Northern Vietnam will witness consecutive heavy rain and thunderstorms, mainly in late afternoons and at night, according to Nguyen Huu Thanh, Deputy Head of the Weather Forecasting Department under the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

From the evening of May 17 to May 18, northern localities and the northern central province of Thanh Hoa will have moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing torrential rains.

The rainfall in mountainous and midland areas may reach 40-90mm or even 150mm in several areas. Meanwhile, the rainfall in Son La, Hoa Binh, the Red River Delta, and Thanh Hoa is likely to be 30-60mm, with some surpassing 80mm.

Heavy rain in the north will decrease from May 19. But on May 22-26, the region will face further showers and thunderstorms, with risks of lightning and hail.

Thanh warned that downpours may lead to flooding in low-lying roads and urban areas. He advised local authorities and residents to monitor weather updates regularly.
