The incident occurred at around 11:17 this morning, May 16, at a depth of roughly 10 kilometres.
The Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics is closely monitoring the situation after the earthquake, which is classified as Level 2 disaster risk at the epicenter.

Ta Thanh Luong from Dien Bien Phu City, said the earthquake resulted in cracks for his family’s two-story house.
Thuan Vu, a resident of Muong Cha District, said that he and his family were inside their home when they suddenly heard a thunder-like sound followed by the rattling of the corrugated iron roof caused by the shaking.
According to some people in Tuan Giao, Muong Ang and Muong Cha districts reported feeling strong tremors for 4-5 seconds.
