On-time flight rate drops to lowest level since start of year

The on-time performance (OTP) rate across the Vietnamese aviation sector in April 2025 reached 57.5 percent, the lowest since the beginning of the year.

According to statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Vietnamese airlines operated 22,295 flights in April, of which 12,821 departed on time. The overall sector's average OTP was 57.5 percent, a drop of 11.7 percentage points compared to the previous month.

Bamboo Airways recorded the highest on-time rate among all airlines, reaching 80.8 percent, topping the industry.

Pacific Airlines, VASCO and Vietravel Airlines reported on-time rates of 80 percent, 72.8 percent and 71.5 percent, respectively.

Vietnam Airlines had an OTP of 69 percent, while Vietjet operated only 43.3 percent of its flights on time in April 2025.

The overall cancellation rate for flights in April was 0.6 percent, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous month.

The airlines with the highest cancellation rates were VASCO (2 percent of flights), Pacific Airlines (1.1 percent) and Vietravel Airlines (1 percent).

Bamboo Airways was the only airline that recorded zero cancellations in April.

At Tan Son Nhat Airport, April saw numerous delayed or rescheduled flights, with some experiencing delays of 8 to 12 hours. The leading cause was disruptions in ground service operations, as certain airlines changed service providers after ending contracts with Saigon Ground Services (SAGS).

Additionally, the airport had to adjust aircraft handling plans due to the holiday rush during the April 30 and May 1 celebrations, simultaneously launching operations at the new Terminal T3.

Despite coordination efforts, many passengers experienced delays or missed flights due to confusion between terminals.

The Civil Aviation Authority has instructed airlines to address service shortcomings and improve the passenger experience.

Looking ahead to the peak summer travel season (from May 15 to August 15, 2025), domestic airlines are expected to operate 68,558 flights across local routes, averaging 745 flights per day, an increase of 21 percent in flights and 18 percent in flight frequency.

Total available seats are estimated at 14 million, up by 21 percent and 18 percent, respectively, compared to the same period in 2024 and the pre-increase schedule.
