Elephant dies after falling into well in Dong Nai

A baby elephant died after falling into a well in the southern province of Dong Nai.

The Dong Nai Culture and Nature Reserve has reported that a herd of seven wild elephants unexpectedly appeared on a road leading to the Suoi Tuong residential area in Vinh Cuu District and then moved to Provincial Road 761.

As the herd was moving, a baby elephant fell into a well. Witnesses urgently contacted forest rangers, who rushed to the scene to rescue the elephant, but it was too late.

The baby elephant had already died. It had fallen into a small well about 2 metres wide and 3.5 metres deep.

Large amounts of soil had caved in around the well, believed to have been caused by the mother elephant and other adults trampling the area to save the calf.

The elephant that died is identified as an endangered and protected species. The Dong Nai Culture and Nature Reserve has proposed preserving its body as a specimen.
