On April 12, Manu, 42, a Spaniard who has lived in Vietnam for several years, tied the knot with his fiancée, Bich Tra, 37, in a uniquely modern Vietnamese wedding procession. Dressed in traditional ao dai, the groom, his friends, and his family boarded the Metro Line at Thao Dien station and travelled to the City Opera House in District 1. For the ancestral ceremony and celebration, the wedding party hopped on a red double-decker bus to the bride's family home in Tan Binh District.
The wedding quickly went viral after photos of the foreign groom in traditional attire using public transportation surfaced on social media. Many praised the couple for their creativity and heartfelt approach.
"We both work in the food and events industry, so we wanted something truly memorable," the bride shared with Dantri/Dtinews. "The Metro idea came up during planning, and we loved it instantly. Both families were incredibly supportive."
According to Tran Hung, the wedding planner, the team conducted multiple site visits and timed train arrivals precisely to ensure everything went smoothly. "Just one missed train would've derailed the plan, so we worked closely with Metro operators," he said.
Guests and fellow commuters joined in the joy, offering congratulations and snapping pictures of the unusual yet heartwarming scene.
The love story behind the event is equally special. Bich Tra and Manu met online over three years ago. Despite language differences, they bonded over shared passions for food, creativity, and a deep appreciation for each other's cultures.
"My husband is incredibly kind and always makes an effort to connect with my family, even though we speak different languages," Bich Tra shared. "We're now learning each other's native tongues to grow even closer."
Following their Vietnam celebration, after a previous wedding in Spain, the couple is now focused on launching a Spanish restaurant in Thao Dien, turning their shared love for food into a dream come true.
