Nha Trang to salvage barge buried beneath beach

Authorities in Nha Trang City in the southern central province of Khanh Hoa have planned to salvage a grounded barge after a five-year-old boy was injured by suspected metal debris at a local beach.

According to Nguyen Van Minh, vice chairman of the Nha Trang People's Committee, local authorities have zoned dangerous areas, installed warning signs and deployed rescue forces.

The move followed the case in which a five-year-old boy in Nha Trang suffered from a cut to his foot while swimming at a section of Nha Trang Beach along Tran Phu Street, believed to be caused by metal debris from a stranded barge.

Dam Hai Van, head of the Nha Trang Bay Management Board, said that the agency's staff discovered an obstacle buried under the sand in the beach section opposite 80 Tran Phu Street.

Van noted that the area is related to a barge stranded in 2019. At that time, the barge owner tried to tow it away but failed due to strong waves. Since then, it has been stuck under the sand.

Tidal fluctuations may expose sharp metal edges, posing potential threats to beachgoers and swimmers.

The Nha Trang Bay Management Board has asked local authorities to quickly assess the danger of the stranded object for measures to guarantee public safety.
