Ninety-year-old Pham Thi Dao is seriously injured in a traffic accident.
Despite being 90 years old, Pham Thi Dao from Thach Thanh district, Thanh Hoa Province, was the main breadwinner for a household of three severely disabled family members. On her way to sell snails, she was involved in a serious road accident and is now suffering from multiple severe injuries. Her family cannot afford the cost of treatment.
More than two weeks after the tragic accident, Dao’s condition remains critical due to the severity of her multiple injuries.
She is currently receiving treatment at Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital, where one-third of her lower left leg has been amputated.
Her daughter, Dinh Thi Thoa, 54, who is caring for her at the hospital, shared that due to the family’s dire financial situation, her elderly mother has continued to work to support three disabled family members.
“In the afternoon of March 17, my mother was on her way to the market to sell snails when she was hit by an oncoming motorbike and suffered serious injuries,” Thoa recounted.
Her daughter, Dinh Thi Thoa, cares for her at the hospital.
Thoa explained that her mother had five children, but two have died due to illness. Her eldest brother, now 69, has mental illness, and her sister, 62, has been paralysed from the waist down since childhood.
“Despite her disability, my sister chose to become a single mother, hoping her children would care for her in old age. Sadly, both her children, born in 1983 and 1995, were also born with paralysis in both legs, just like their mother. Even at her age, my mum must keep working to provide for her children and grandchildren because the social support they receive is not enough to cover medicine,” Thoa added.
When the accident happened, Thoa borrowed just over VND5 million from neighbours, and the motorbike driver involved in the crash contributed VND15 million to help cover the emergency treatment.
At present, the family relies on meals provided by charity groups. However, their funds for treatment have already run out, and they do not know where to turn next.
Speaking to Dantri/Dtinews reporters, Dr Doan Le Vinh from the General Trauma Department at Vietnam-Germany Hospital said, “Pham Thi Dao was admitted with extremely severe multiple injuries from a traffic accident, including traumatic brain injury, a fractured left arm, complex fractures in both bones of the lower left leg, and a broken right leg.”
Dr Vinh added that Dao has undergone amputation of one-third of her lower left leg, surgery for brain trauma, and surgery to stabilise the fracture in her left arm. She will soon undergo further surgery on her right leg. Her left leg remains necrotic and infected, and her left arm is still unstable, requiring additional surgeries.
“For a woman of 90, these injuries are devastating both physically and emotionally. When she briefly regained consciousness, she whispered that she must survive to care for her children and two disabled grandchildren. It was deeply moving for all of us.
Dao’s treatment will be prolonged and costly, and her family has no means left to pay. We sincerely hope that Dantri readers and kind-hearted benefactors will come together to support her, giving her a chance to recover and return home to her family,” Dr Vinh expressed.
