Yen Tu Mountain race resumed after long suspension

The Yen Tu Mountain Competition in the northern province of Quang Ninh has resumed after a 12-year hiatus.

The event, jointly organised by Uong Bi City authorities and the Quang Ninh Journalists Association, will take place on April 20.

The event, themed Conquering Phu Van Peak, is expected to attract 5,000 athletes competing in two distance categories: 5 kilometres and 8 kilometres. In the 5-kilometre race, participants will start at Minh Tam Square and follow a route passing Giai Oan Pagoda, Tung Road, To Tower, and Hoa Yen Pagoda. They must finish the race within four hours.

The 8-kilometre race will start at Minh Tam Square and pass through additional landmarks, including Mot Mai Pagoda, Bao Sai Pagoda, An Ky Sinh Statue, Tran Nhan Tong Buddha Statue, and Dong Pagoda, along with the locations covered in the 5-kilometre race. Athletes must complete the route within six hours.

According to Nguyen Van Thanh, vice chairman of the Uong Bi City People's Committee, this is part of the city's tourism stimulus programme, which aims to promote tourism in general and the Yen Tu historic and scenic site in particular.

On December 8 last year, the Yen Tu Heritage 2024-Touching the Heritage run drew roughly 6,000 participants. The event aimed to promote Yen Tu's image as part of efforts to nominate the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac Historical Complex for recognition as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

This year, Uong Bi City has set a goal to serve 3.2 million tourists.
