Traffic accidents in Vietnam have continued to decrease during the Tet Lunar New Year holiday.

According to a report from the Ministry of Public Security, on January 27, the third day of the Tet holiday, 52 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide, resulting in 26 fatalities and 36 injuries, all of which occurred on roads. These numbers reflected a year-on-year decrease of 32 accidents, 12 deaths, and 33 injuries.

Traffic police nationwide addressed 7,541 violations, issuing fines totalling VND19.97 billion (USD788,954) on the third day of the holiday. Authorities confiscated 47 cars, 2,294 motorcycles, and 65 other vehicles and revoked 428 driver's licenses. Notably, 1,842 cases involved violations related to alcohol consumption.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh approved a nine-day holiday from January 25 to February 2 for the 2025 Tet Lunar New Year, Vietnam's most significant celebration.

Since the implementation of a new prime ministerial decree issued on January 1, which introduced stricter regulations on traffic violations, traffic accidents across Vietnam have seen a significant decline.

Under the decree, cars that fail to stop at red lights will be fined VND20 million (USD780), an increase from the previous fine of VND6 million (USD230). Meanwhile, motorbikes running red lights will face fines ranging from VND4 million to VND6 million.
