Deputy minister of National Defence Hoang Xuan Chien (third from left) visit families in Lang Nu Village on December 15.
The Ministry of National Defence co-operated with authorities of Lao Cai Province and held a ceremony on December 15 to deliver 40 new houses to the families who lost their homes in a devastating flood that buried Lang Nu Village in September.
The houses were completed after just 68 days of construction, 15 days ahead of schedule.
A month earlier, the families' representatives drew lots to select their new houses, built on a 10-hectare resettlement area about two kilometres from their old village.
Located on a hill, the resettlement area includes 40 stilt houses of 96 square metres each, built following the traditional architecture of the Tay ethnic group. There is also a 300-square-metre community house for public events and a 200-square-metre school for pre-school and elementary children. The main road to the village has also been paved with concrete.
Speaking at the event, Trinh Xuan Truong, chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee, said that construction workers had tried to work extra hours to complete the project on time.
The official also shared that an opening ceremony will be held in a few days for the resettlement area in Lang Nu Village and two other resettlement areas in Bac Ha District.
"We're happy to see the villagers' eager to move into their new homes," he said. "They're all busy planting trees and flowers to decorate their houses here."
Forty households in Lang Nu Village lost their homes to horrific flash floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Yagi on September 10, which left 60 people dead, 15 injured, and seven missing.
In a recent visit to the village, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked local authorities to build a resettlement area for affected families in Lang Nu by the end of December.
