Foot-and-mouth disease has spread in the central province of Quang Tri, affecting hundreds of cows and buffaloes.
The cattle are in the three districts of Vinh Linh, Huong Hoa and Dakrong.
By August 30, as many as 462 buffaloes and cows in Quang Tri contracted the disease. Among those, 13 were culled and buried and 193 others recovered.
The disease was detected in Vinh Linh District from August 27 with 31 cows and buffaloes affected.
According to local authorities, one of the reasons for the quick spread of the disease in Quang Tri is a vaccine shortage which has been attributed to bidding process difficulties.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has provided Quang Tri with 27,000 doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine and 3,500 litres of disinfectant chemicals. The vaccine has been given to the affected districts.
