According to some workers, although they worked between 2 and 4 extra hours a day, the company failed to pay for their meals as regulated. Others complained that the bonuses and gifts they received from the company during festivals were too small compared to what they contributed to the labour union's fund.
Speaking to Dantri/Dtinews on Thursday afternoon, the Yen Dinh District Labour Union said they arrived at the Alena Vietnam Footwear Company on the morning of August 22 after hearing about a workers' strike here.
"More than 1,000 workers stopped working this morning and went on strike at the company to ask for proper payment for their extra working hours," the labour union said. "We came to work with the company and the workers and have agreed on the issue."

The local labour union said that the company has agreed with the workers' proposals, including providing them with a meal worth VND20,000 if they work two extra hours or more.
The union said, "After reaching an agreement, the workers returned to work in the afternoon."
