A backup battery exploded after being taken out of a passenger's checked baggage at HCM City's Tan Son Nhat Airport on July 31.

According to the airport, the incident occurred at the airport's international terminal early on July 31.

"When screening for the battery in the passenger's checked baggage, we called the passenger to come and bring it with his hand luggage," a representative at the airport told Dantri the same morning. "However, the passenger took it out and left it at the screening area. A short time later, it exploded, and a fire broke out."

The representative said security staff arrived and put out the fire shortly after that, so the incident did not affect the airport's operation.

The airport added that many similar cases have happened when passengers left backup batteries in their checked baggage and had to take them out following screening.
