Under the recommendation sent to the Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), Van Phong Airport will be located in Van Thanh Commune in Van Ninh District, some 65 kilometres north of Nha Trang City, 101 kilometres north of Cam Ranh International Airport and 49 kilometres south of Tuy Hoa Airport in Phu Yen Province.

The 479-hectare airport will be totally located on water, avoiding residential areas, protective forests and historical sites and proposed docking zones.
In the first phase scheduled by 2029, Van Phong Airport would have a total capacity of 1.5 million passengers, meeting level 4E design standards with a 3,050-metre runway.

Once put into operation, Van Phong Airport is expected to promote the development of the Van Phong Economic Zone.
Last year, the prime minister approved the adjustment of the general planning for the Van Phong Economic Zone until 2040, with a vision for 2050, aiming to turn it into a national maritime economic centre. According to the planning, the zone will include a seaport, an airport, a cable car and a marina. This economic zone is aimed to consist of 19 sub-zones, situated a total area of 150,000 hectares in Ninh Hoa Town and Van Ninh District.
