11 die as passengers bus buried in Ha Giang landslide

At least 11 people have died after a 16-seat passenger bus was buried in a landslide in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang's Bac Me District early on Saturday morning.

Vice Chairman of Bac Me District People's Committee, Ma Van Toe said that the tragic accident occurred at 4 am when the bus was running on the National Road 34.

"As of 5 pm, rescue teams found 11 bodies at the site," the official said. "Four people were injured and have been sent to hospital while rescue forces were still trying to look for one missing."

A witness said that the bus was suddenly hit by a large amount of soil and rocks falling from a nearby mountain while running on the road. Some people on the bus and from other vehicles came out to help pull the bus out but another landslide hit them.

Many northern mountainous localities including Ha Giang have reoprted heavy rains with total rainfall recorded between 7 pm on July 12 to 7 am on July 13 reaching nearly 290 mm.
