According to the Vietnam Railway Corporation (VRC), the incident occurred at 11.55 pm on July 10 when the H2705 cargo train was running from Hanoi to Lao Cai. A man threw stones at the train while passing through Yen Bai Province. The assistant driver, Nguyen Van Quan, 53, was hit in the head by a flying stone, leaving him with serious injuries.
Quan was immediately given some first aid. And when the train reached the Mau Dong Station at 12.04 am on July 11, he was taken to hospital for treatment.
VRC then sent a new driving team to continue the train service.
VRC said this was not the first time trains had been targeted by people throwing stones.
"There were 75 stone attacks on our trains in the first half of this year, breaking glass windows of 79 locomotives," the corporation reported. "The attacks occurred mostly in Khanh Hoa (18 cases), Dong Nai (15), Binh Dinh (8), Quang Nam (8), and Binh Thuan and Thua Thien Hue (five each)."
VRC has asked localities to take more stringent measures to prevent stone attacks on trains on local railways.
